Chicago, Illinois, In Progress, Residential
Located in Chicago’s Hyde Park neighborhood, we started with a modest 1880’s row-house with a large rear yard. A young family approached us wishing to add an arrival area in the back of the home yet maintain the light, view, and fresh air to their existing kitchen and dining spaces.
Our response was to first create an open garden, then introduce an arrival area addition as a sculpture piece set into the garden. The addition is placed along the north edge of the property to preserve light and view. A millwork core organizes the interior of the addition. The arrival experience is rich and varied- a composition of soft and hard surfaces, open green space, sun spots, shade, outside rooms, and rainwater captured from the roof.
